Job Summary:

The Health Promoter – Harm Reduction is responsible for facilitating the delivery of health promotion programming to minimize the negative health, social, and legal impacts associated with substance use in First Nations individuals and communities supported by Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority.

Qualifications:

• Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
• College diploma in a health-related field
• A minimum of two years’ experience in a health setting
• Experience working in a First Nations health setting is an asset
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Excellent presentation skills
• Strong organizational and facilitation skills
• Experience with Microsoft Office, graphic design software, and other computer software
• Knowledge of the culture, history, geographical location, and health priorities of the First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout region
• Valid Ontario G driver’s licence
• The ability to speak in one of the Sioux Lookout area First Nations dialects, and/or write in syllabics are definite assets
• The ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis

Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Works with communities to identify and monitor community priorities around harm reduction.
2. Works with communities to identify supporting factors for facilitating behavior change and work with them to identify solutions, develop enhanced approaches, and create supportive environments to prevent sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections and associated substance use related harms.
3. In collaboration with other ACW staff, develops, implements, monitors, and supports the evaluation of a regional strategy for Harm Reduction health promotion.
4. Ensures that the Harm Reduction program incorporates community feedback into future regional and community based programs and initiatives.
5. Supports and enables communities to develop and implement their own health promotion strategy/approaches to Harm Reduction.
6. Identifies, develops, and supports community capacity through training and mentorship needs of community-based staff and through the support of community action to prevent sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections and associated substance use related harms.
7. Works with policy analysts and communities to develop and support healthy policies to prevent acquiring and transmitting infectious diseases.
8. Works with other ACW staff to develop culturally appropriate education material and health promotion campaigns.
9. In collaboration with the Harm Reduction team, provides education and health promotion on sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections to Chiefs and Councils, Health Directors, community-based nurses, community-based health workers, community members, and their contacts through community visits, radio shows, local newsletters, school programs, community workshops, webinars, videoconferences, social media, etc.
10. Identifies and develops potential partnerships for regional and community-based Harm Reduction programming.
11. Develops and shares best practices for Harm Reduction health promotion and education.
12. Maintains a good working relationship with community based and off-reserve health staff.
13. Provides expert advice, technical consultation, and continuing education to SLFNHA staff, key stakeholders, and communities relating to preventing sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections health promotion.
14. Uses health promotion expertise and experience to advocate for communities and the Sioux Lookout area to prevent sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections and associated substance use related harms.
15. Represents SLFNHA and Approaches to Community Wellbeing on related working groups or committees, as needed.
16. Other duties as assigned.
