Family Court Support Worker
The Family Court Support Worker provides direct support to victims of domestic violence who are involved in the family court process. Shifts will be scheduled from Monday to Friday, 8:30 am-4:30 pm., up to 35 hours per week. Must be flexible depending on Shelter’s needs.
The following duties and responsibilities are associated with this position.
- Provide information regarding the family court process.
- Safety planning
- Assist with legal aid process
- Accompany the victim to court proceedings, where appropriate
- Debrief & discuss court outcomes, lawyer appointments, Family Law Information Centre meetings, consultations with duty counsel & next steps
- Provide referrals to specialized services and supports in the community
- Communicate with criminal court-based services, such as the Victim Witness Assistance Program, where appropriate and in accordance with an appropriate protocol
- Communicate with other family court-based services and referral sources to ensure seamless delivery of appropriate information & support
- Complete all case notes, activity logs, reports and forms as required
- Establish linkages and working relationships with external community service providers
Qualifications
- Degree/Diploma in the Human Service/ Social Work Field.
- 2 or more years’ experience with one on one and group counselling experience.
- Thorough understanding of issues connected with domestic violence, harm reduction and trauma informed services.
- Previous experience in crisis intervention, short term support, advocacy and referral services
- Travel to provide outreach services
- Training/experience in the Family Court process & related forms
- Strong listening skills, written and oral communication skills
- Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills
- Experience in Group Facilitation, public speaking and program delivery.
- Ability to provide non-judgmental support
- Cross-cultural Awareness and Sensitivity.
- Experience and knowledge in working with anti-racist/anti oppression framework.
- Willingness to work flexible hours
- A valid “G” driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
- Possession of a current CPR/First Aid certificate an asset.
- Current criminal reference including a vulnerable sectors check – to be provided upon acceptance of the position
- Bi-lingual or French Speaking is an asset
