The province’s chief coroner is one step closer to possibly calling for an inquest into all Ontario First Nation fire deaths.
Dr. Dirk Huyer indicates he and his federal counterparts are planning a meeting to look seriously at what can be done, whether that’s a full blown inquest, or a more specific review.
Huyer tell us the plan is to gather sometime in December to try to develop a framework on how they’ll approach the review of the deaths and figure out their next steps.
He maintains it’s really figuring out what the strategy may be to get the biggest benefit for public safety and the best understanding of these deaths.
The process was spurred by the house fire deaths of nine residents in Pikangikum First Nation in 2016.
