A Fort Frances family has launched a campaign to have cameras installed on the side of all school buses.
This stems from a series of incidents involving the bus their 4-year-old daughter rides and a number of close calls.
Randy Thoms says there has already been seven incidents of vehicles not stopping for a bus near his home this school year.
Thoms says he would like to have the cameras mandatory in Ontario.
He notes school bus cameras would record licence plates, provide a description of the vehicle and the driver and help police charges stick in court.
Thoms adds it will also free up time for police and bus drivers and notes it will greatly enhance student safety.
He says other jurisdictions are using the cameras and they are also being tested in Winnipeg.
Thoms is asking the province to launch a pilot project in his area to show how the cameras can serve as an extra pair of eyes.
He has raised the issue with area MPP’s Sarah Campbell and Michael Gravelle.
