It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Yong Moon Mah on Monday November 25, 2024.
He passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a short illness at the Owen Sound Hospital.
Yong was born on February 12th, 1939 to Chong Guk Mah and Sopanye Mah in Kilju, Ham Kyunig Buck-Do, North Korea. His family fled to Gun San, South Korea during the Korean War and later his family moved to Seoul, Korea where he grew up and attended and graduated from Kyung Bok High School. After completing his military service in the Air Force, he went to West Germany to further his education. He studied at the University of Technische Hochschule Darmstadt in West Germany and graduated as a Mechanical Engineer specializing in Pulp & Paper. This is where Yong met Sotchi (Suzie) Tchong and married in 1971. Together Yong and Sotchi immigrated to Canada in 1973. He started his career as an engineer with Reed Company in Quebec City, Quebec. He was transferred to Dryden, Ontario in 1978 where he worked until his retirement from Weyerhauser. He resided for 33 years in Dryden before moving to Owen Sound to be close to his children. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and reading about world history. He also enjoyed the company of the Edelweiss Club, socializing with his investment club members and the camaraderie of his fellow work colleagues. Yong is survived by his wife Sotchi “Suzie”, daughter Katja (Matthew) of Owen Sound, son John (Tonya) of Waterloo and his beloved grandchildren, Kai, Bode, Tajy, Heath, and Mischa. He is also survived by his sisters Hae Duck Kim and Hae Ok Lee both of Seoul, Korea, Choon Ok Rhee of Maryland and sister-in-law Jae Kyung Mah of Maryland along with many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Thursday, November 28, 2024 at 11:30 a.m., followed by a reception at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 14th St. W., Owen Sound, 519-376-7492.
