Another Canada Carbon Rebate has been paid out to residents.
The payment came through on Monday for anyone who has filed their income tax on time.
Residents were not the only ones to benefit as small businesses also get a rebate.
The money comes from the taxes residents pay on fuel and is paid out quarterly. An Ontario family of four can expect to receive roughly $280 back from the rebate.
According to the federal government, eight out of 10 households get back more money than they pay in the tax.
Rural communities pay more for gas due to the extended shipping needs to reach their community. To compensate for this the government has doubled the rural supplement available for households in rural areas and smaller communities from 10 percent to 20 percent of their base Canada Carbon Rebate amount.
You can check your potential rebate with the Canada Carbon Rebate estimator tool for individuals.
Residents are automatically signed up for the rebate as long as their taxes have been filed on time.
“It’s really important that people stay up to date with their income tax submissions, even if you don’t think you have to pay income tax,” said Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hadju. “There are lots of misconceptions about filing your income tax return, but it’s really important that people file their income tax returns because many of the benefits, including this one, are attached to an income tax.”
Hadju is encouraging those who are having a challenge with filing their income tax to reach out to a number of different organizations across the community for assistance or even her own office.
