A new report shows there is a persistant crisis in mental health and substance abuse in the Kiiwetinoong Riding.
The study was compiled by the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority.
It says that according to Office of the Chief Coroner, the unnatural death rate for their region is 3.2 times higher than the provincial average and suicide by hanging is 15 times higher than the national rate.
The report also uses personal stories to illustrate the mental health and substance abuse problems.
The Health Authority says while the statistics are difficult, the report enhances the regional knowledge base about health, mental health and substance use.
It also shows that mental health and substance abuse issues have worsened over time and the Health Authority says there has been an inadequate response from the provincial and federal governments.
