The Canadian government has reached an agreement-in-principle in a class action lawsuit involving former residents of Federal Indian Boarding Homes.
The program was set up in the 1950’s to place some 40,000 Indigenous children in boarding homes while they attended schools away from their communities.
The suit filed four years ago claimed they experienced physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse, as well as a loss of their culture and language.
The agreement-in-principle allows further discussion on a final deal including compensation.
That could see $10,000 for each person who was placed in a home, and a further $10,000 to $200,000 for those who faced abused.
