The returning Mayor of Red Lake is excited to serve another term.
Fred Mota was re-elected in the Monday Municipal election, earning 82% support.
“I am truly humbled by our community and I want to thank all of our residents for the support they’ve shown me and given me through my past four years as Mayor and the confidence that the community has in me moving forward for our next four years.”
Debra Geary is new on Council, while Warren Badiuk, Janet Hager and Jamie Kristoff are all back for another four years.
Mota says, “We had a good four years. My past term we paid down a lot of debt. We made investments of over $22 million in our municipality and I’m hoping that’s going to continue.”
Mota says one of the main priorities moving forward is housing development.
“Through our discussions with the province and especially Minister Rickford and Minister Smith, we’re hoping to secure some lands in the Red Lake area for development.
Mota adds other issues include expanding the hospital, recruiting more doctors, improving medical infrastructure and advocating for a CT Scan Unit.
Another priority is housing for seniors and Mota says they will be working with the Kenora District Services Board and public entities.
After a turbulent four years with the roof of the Heritage Centre blowing off, forest fires, the evacuation of the entire community and flooding, Mota says he’s hoping for a quiet four years where they can get a lot of work done.
