The federal NDP is taking credit for the measures announced by the Liberal government to make life more affordable to the average Canadian.
Cash boosts include doubling the GST credit for the next six months, as well as direct dental benefits for the next two years for kids under 12 for a total up to $1,300 per child, with an expansion to those under the age of 18, seniors and those with disabilities by 2023.
There is also a one time housing benefit top up of $500.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says they were instrumental in getting the dental care program.
“We got it in writing. We forced the government to deliver on a large project like dental care. That’s a multi-year project. It’s going to take a number of years to develop. We’re proud that we are able to use our power to get something meaningful for Canadians. To force this government to do something meaningful for Canadians.”
He notes, “Families will receive money in their pockets. A cheque will be sent out to them to cover the cost of going to see a dentist. This is real support for families.”
Singh made his comments on Tuesday in Thunder Bay, wrapping up his tour of northern Ontario.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says by doubling the GST tax credit, parents with two kids could receive up to an extra $467 this fall to help with the cost of living.
Trudeau says the housing top up will reach 1.8 million low income Canadians.
Trudeau says parliament will approve the changes this fall.
