Jakob Schmidt
July 9, 1936 – August 20, 2022
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Dad, Jakob Schmidt, on August 20, 2022 at the Dryden Regional Health Centre.
Jakob was born in Budapest, Hungary and was the fifth child of nine children. He was born to Anne and Geza Schmidt.
He worked for the rail line until the Hungarian revolution, at which time he decided to immigrate to Canada, traveling first to Austria where he lived for a year then by ship to Quebec on July 3rd, 1957. Jake decided to journey further and travelled to Fort Frances then Ear Falls for work at Chukuni Sawmill. He began to build his family in Ear Falls where he lived until 2006.
Jakob was an amazing man, always busy building gadgets, improving his home he built himself and changing the landscape of his property. He had a great passion for music and entertaining family. He was always ready to take the kids skiing, fishing, camping and made many different things for the children to entertain them.
Jakob was very proud of his position at the Griffith Mine as “Lead Hand Blaster” and worked very hard to be the best at his job.
He was a wonderful father to his stepdaughter Debbie Liedtke (Manfred), sons Eugene (Joanne) and Randy (Tania) and daughters Cindy and Pamela (Rudi). Amazing grandfather to Christopher, Autym, Andrew, Cole, Alyx, Chelsey, Candace, Justin, Nick, Jaeden, Mykenna, Randee, Jesse, Connor and Rihanna, great grandchildren Dalton, Logan, Trinity, Brock, Noah, Ariana, Gavyn, Carter, Kala, Levi, Kelsey, Emily, Rory and Tatum.
Jakob is survived by his children and grandchildren, siblings Margit Mercz and brother Sandor Schmidt of Hungary and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jakob was predeceased by his wife Elinor Schmidt (Tattrie), parents Anna and Geza, brothers Geza, Laci and Antal and sister Therchi.
Jakob had a passion for watching hockey and loved watching the children in the family play, and seldom missed watching a Toronto Maple Leafs game. He enjoyed curling and participated in and organized many tournaments over the years. He had a passion for landscaping and gardening on his property on Lac Suel where our family home was.
Jake loved doing things with his family and was always ready at a moments notice to take them skiing or going to our favourite spot on Goose Island for a day trip or weekend camping. He loved family summer holidays exploring Canada and the USA often for a month at a time.
We are so incredibly sad to say goodbye to you Dad, we will remember the music playing on the stereo and how you loved to play accordion and mouth organ. The many play areas you built for us when we were children; the zipline, double decker tree house, tire swing, the sliding hill you hauled water to in buckets so it would be banked perfectly. How you always welcomed family and friends to our home for celebrations and bonfires.
We will miss your beautiful smile and sparkling blue eyes. We will miss you everyday but know you are dancing in the sky amongst the bright shiny stars.
The family would like to thank Peggy Reed for believing in Dad, taking him into her life and heart. We love your beautiful heart Peggy!
A Memorial Service will take place on Friday, August 26, 2022 at 2 p.m. at the Upper Falls Church with Pastor John Schneider officiating.
Interment to follow at the Upper Falls Church Cemetery.
