Weekly column from Kenora MP Eric Melillo:
Dear Constituents,
I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing long weekend. I enjoyed spending time at the Sioux Lookout Blueberry Festival, Sioux Narrows Arts Festival, and Eagle Lake First Nation Pow Wow. Our region is incredibly fortunate to have so many local events and festivals. Thank you to all the volunteers who donate their time and play an integral role in ensuring these events can continue.
I recently travelled to Washington to meet with various United States House Representatives. We discussed the ongoing Lake of the Woods sustainability efforts and the bi-national work we can do to ensure our watershed is protected. While in Washington, I also had meetings to discuss the importance of northern Ontario’s mining and forestry sector.
Reconciliation
I hope, given the recent visit of Pope Francis to Canada, and the Papal Apology, that Survivors, their families, and friends are taking care of their emotional and mental health. For IRS Survivors, their families, and those requiring emotional support, please do not hesitate to reach out to:
• IRS Survivors Society at 1-800-721-0066 (toll-free)
• IRS Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419I am committed to continuing to listen to Survivors and advancing reconciliation.
Hockey Canada Allegations
The allegations of sexual assault and the involvement of Hockey Canada that have arisen over the past few weeks are incredibly disturbing. The Hockey Canada officials involved in the settlements and incomplete investigations need to take responsibility and evaluate whether or not their actions merit that they remain in their positions.
I am committed to working alongside my colleagues to support victims of sexual assault and increase the transparency, accountability, and equity within Hockey Canada.
