Another effort to fast track the training of personal support workers here at home.
Confederation College is now accepting applications for a six month accelerated training program that starts on June 6.
A total of 30 students will be accepted at campuses across the region this go-around and seats will be awarded to eligible applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.
There is no tuition fee and funding support is provided for expenses such as textbooks and a paid work placement.
Dean of the College’s School of Health, Negahneewin and Community Services, Shane Strickland, says, “There is considerable demand for trained PSWs in the northwestern Ontario region and beyond. This opportunity not only creates additional PSW seats for prospective students, it reduces barriers to the program by offering financial support.”
Strickland says the first time offering the program last year was well received.
“We offered two cohorts. We were very happy to be able to say that we had about an 80% retention and success rate of the program. So that’s very successful. In line with the success rate of many of our programs.”
He adds, “Students do get immediate work. They are provided with a paid placement within the program and because of the paid placement, those experiences typically turn into jobs for the students.”
