The wait is almost over for Red Lake hockey fans.
The Miners begin their quest for a national junior hockey championship today (Thursday) at 1:00 central time against the Pickering Panthers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Head Coach Geoff Walker provides a preview of what he will say to his team prior to face-off.
“Just go out there and enjoy it. I told them they, with what they went through this year, they have earned the right to be at this tournament probably more so than anyone else. With all the adversity, the shutdown, the rink chiller being down, and just all the different type of adversity this group has went through.”
It got compounded recently with the flooding of Highway 105.
However, Walker believes they are prepared and ready to go.
“We’ll get them as prepared as we can and it’s just about them going out and executing. I think this group, we got some guys who can play, we feel like we got pace, obviously all those little details are going to be magnified with wall plays, pucks out, pucks in.”
Red Lake and Pickering is the first game of the 2022 Centennial Cup and all preliminary round and semifinals will be streamed live on Hockey Canada website
