National recognition for a nurse working in Sandy Lake First Nation.
Hannah Gray is one of four in Canada to receive the 2022 Excellence in Nursing Award.
She has worked in the remote northern community since 2019 following the successful completion of her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at the University of Ottawa.
Gray started her career in the city’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where she strengthened her assessment and communication skills.
Discovering her love of supporting nurses through education, she has taught nursing in both the Bachelors program and practical nursing program.
Gray says she loves working in Sandy Lake and the community sees her as a partner and has appreciated her support and guidance with the pandemic.
Officials say Gray works alongside the community to support their initiatives and partnerships and has created a culture of integrity and learning in the nursing station, while prioritizing good humour and peer support.
Gray says her love of the north has deepened and she has met amazing colleagues and friends and has connected with the community.
Nurses who receive the award are nominated by their peers and selected based on their judgment, professionalism and culturally safe healthcare work.
