A huge investment to connect more local residents.
Both levels of government have announced $53.1 million in funding to bring high-speed internet to 4,777 homes and businesses across Kenora-Rainy River.
Communities benefiting include Ignace, Rainy River, Barwick as well as a number of First Nations across Grand Council Treaty #3 territory.
The provincial commitment is $14.4 million.
Minister of Northern Development Greg Rickford says broadband is key for education, job creation and economic growth to keep local communities connected.
He adds, “For far too long, Northern Ontario has lacked access to high-speed internet with limited connectivity in many remote communities.”
The announcement contributes to the joint Federal and Provincial progress toward ensuring that 98% of Canadians have access to high-speed internet by 2026, and 100% by 2030.
It also brings the Government of Ontario one step closer to achieving its goal of bringing reliable high-speed internet access to every region of the province by the end of 2025.
