Provincial Police in Sioux Lookout are welcoming $177,415 in provincial funds to strengthen and support victims and survivors of intimate partner violence and human trafficking.
Officials will create three training videos as well as a trauma-informed approach checklist tool for officers to use when completing police interviews and statements with impacted survivors.
The videos will include input from subject-matter experts including crown attorneys, prosecutors and psychologists.
They will be shared with the Ontario Police Video Training Alliance for distribution to over 90 participating police agencies across Canada.
In addition, a training conference will be held for police and other service providers, with presentations from experts and survivors.
In total the Ontario government is spending $5.9 million over two years to help 37 police services work with local organizations and community partners.
Of the projects funded, 17 will focus on addressing the needs of Indigenous survivors or strengthening relationships with First Nation organizations and communities.
