The apology from the Pope is just the beginning.
That’s the feeling of Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa.
Following Question Period Monday, he talked about last week’s meeting at the Vatican by Canadian indigenous groups.
“The statement was met with mixed feelings in our nations,” Mamakwa told MPPs at Queen’s Park.
“Rage…sadness…hurt…relief and beginnings of hope.”
Mamakwa suggests survivors need more than just words.
“An apology is just the first step in the long line of action that must be taken in the path forward. We stand in unity with survivors, their families, and all our nations affected by the intergenerational trauma that was done to us by the Catholic Church and other churches.”
In the conclusion of his remarks, Mamakwa says going forward we can do better and must do better.
