Minnesota is looking at doing away with Columbus Day and replacing it with Indigenous People’s Day.
Moorhead House Rep. Heather Keeler says it’s a small step to fix the historical injustices suffered by First Nations peoples.
Keeler says Columbus is seen negatively among Indigenous people, and not worth celebrating.
If approved, the day would be celebrated the second Monday in October.
She says it’s already recognized in some Minnesota cities and several states.
Part of her request is to also have schools provide one hour of learning on that day, focusing on First Nations history and achievements.
In Canada, Indigenous People’s Day is recognized on June 21.
