The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority is expressing disappointment with a planned closure of two municipal childcare centres in Sioux Lookout.
A transfer deal between municipality and the Kenora District Services Board didn’t materialize due to concerns on which union would represent workers.
The Health Authority says the March 31 closure will have a ripple effect to all families, workers, and children who depend on the service.
The agency says in a statement that they have families that depend on the services and now they are left without options.
It goes on say as one of the largest employers in Sioux Lookout, they are upset that they weren’t notified of the decision.
The Health Authority adds it will become even more difficult to attract and retain much-needed staff and physicians without any childcare options, stressing the area is already facing a labour shortage.
The agency says it plans to follow up with the Kenora District Services Board on possible solutions.
