Ontario’s Minister of Indigenous Affairs says he’s aware of some work being done at residential school sites.
Last November the government announced an additional $10 million to identify, investigate and protect former school sites.
Greg Rickford stresses this is an Indigenous-led search.
“We have currently worked with an Indigenous-led group to support some specific projects, most notably Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation, which is situated right in the City of Kenora.”
Rickford adds he knows of a couple of other applications that are being considered.
He notes “Communities themselves, most proximal to these schools, have taken up the responsibility of helping to organize specific activities. This is more complex than meets the eye.”
The Kenora-Rainy River MPP stresses the search’s are Indigenous-led but notes the government will be there to provide any assistance.
