A State of Emergency related to COVID outbreaks has been declared in three communities in Nishnawbe Aski Nation territory.
As of last Thursday, 357 active cases have been reported across NAN’s 49 First Nations.
Grand Chief Derek Fox says Bearskin Lake First Nation is not the only community facing a crisis.
“We look to both Canada and Ontario to provide the necessary support to all of our communities facing similar challenges.”
Fox notes, “Crisis response in remote First Nations is not measured in just dollars and cents. It’s not just about submitting proposals and receiving funding. It’s about having people on the ground to help.”
He adds, “All of our communities rely on support from our treaty partners and it is there obligation to provide that support. We need to cut the red tape and work together if we are going to get through this.”
