The Northwestern Health Unit is promoting the importance of receiving a COVID booster shot.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says third doses are now available to anyone over the age of 50.
To be eligible you must be 168 days clear of your second shot.
Dr. Young Hoon stresses, “A complete COVID-19 vaccine series continues to provide very good protection against serious illness for most people. Over time some people may be less protected such as older adults.”
She adds the vaccine is an essential tool to help prevent and control the virus and its complications.
The shots are available at community vaccination clinics or participating pharmacies.
Dr. Young Hoon admits the uptake for the third shot isn’t as robust as the first two.
“The third dose rollout has been slower. We are seeing that people aren’t coming up as quickly to get their third dose. Maybe it doesn’t feel as urgent for them, perhaps for some people they want to take a wait and see approach or some feel the third dose carry additional risk the first and second dose did not have.”
Recent regional statistics have shown the third dose vaccine rate is about 6%.
She stresses the third dose is strongly recommended, especially for older adults.
The province also indicated in the new year, starting on January 4 anyone over the age of 18 can get their booster shot.
