The Municipality of Red Lake has been forced to close the Cochenour Arena until further notice.
A catastrophic failure was discovered with failed tubes within the ice plant chiller.
This resulted in ammonia entering the system causing immediate safety concerns.
Cimco Refrigeration deemed the ice plant inoperable and urged the Municipality to shut the arena down.
Officials say due to the ammonia, closure of the arena is imperative for the safety of everyone.
They believe the facility will be shutdown for a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks.
Staff are working with the Township of Ear Falls on available ice times once its arena is operational.
The Ear Falls Arena recently had to close due to issues with the chiller at the ice plant.
