A group of three northern First Nations is accusing the government of reckless behaviour regarding the Ring of Fire.
The Chiefs of Attawapiskat, Fort Albany and Neskantaga have sent a joint letter to Premier Doug Ford.
It’s in opposition to public statements from the premier that the massive mining development is going ahead no matter what.
The letter states the comments are out of touch with reality, out of step with reconciliation and modern legal development, and not in keeping with the constitutional mandate of honour of the Crown.
The three page letter states the comments are incredible displays of bad faith in the midst of the ongoing consultations and regulatory assessments that are supposed to mean something.
The Chiefs call the actions colonialism and demand the government stops pushing ahead unilaterally with reckless uninformed development in the Ring of Fire.
They add the Premier can’t possibly know what is good to do in the remote north from an environmental point of view.
The letter was also sent to Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry and Indigenous Affairs Greg Rickford and various other provincial and federal officials.
