The Ontario government has introduced proposed amendments to the Far North Act.
The goal is to improve competitiveness in the natural resource sector and maintain cultural and environmental protections.
The planned changes would enhance economic growth and job creation in the north.
The revised Act will focus on enabling the development of all-season roads, electrical transmission projects and mineral development, while maintaining community-based land-use planning.
Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry, and Minister of Indigenous Affairs Greg Rickford says the province worked extensively with Nishnawbe Aski Nation to review the legislation and recommend updates.
Rickford notes the review process also included extensive consultations with Far North First Nations, Indigenous organizations, industry, municipalities and the public.
Derek Fox is the Grand Chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation and says NAN was pleased to have had an opportunity to work together with the province and review and recommend updates.
The government says it will continue working with northern First Nations to develop community-based land-use plans.
