You will soon be able to have a PCR test done at a local pharmacy, even if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19.
Health Minister Christine Elliott says the measure is especially necessary where health care facilities are in short supply.
“We know that in rural Ontario, Northern Ontario especially, this is a problem for assessment facilities, but not for pharmacies. Most organizations and most towns have pharmacies available.”
Elliott says strict infection prevention and control measures will be in place.
Pharmacies will have to have a dedicated space to do the tests as well as allowing time between tests for proper cleaning.
The free in-store testing will be a change as previously it was only available to those with no symptoms.
Participating locations will also provide in store diagnostic testing, PCR self collection kits and be drop off points for at-home tests.
Elliott says they are following recommendations from the Chief Medical Officer of Health, noting this is an important step as we head into the holiday season.
