My dad Herman Deitz joined the RW Rifles at 18 in 1940.
He was transferred to the the Navy a year later when he was heard talking German.
The military wanted him on the ships so he could interpret intercepted messages and prisoners.
He was in the Navy for 5 yrs.
On D-Day he was on the HMCS Matene.
My Grandpa Philip Deitz served in WW1. He was at the Somme and was buried alive and dug out by his comrades.
He survived the war and tried enlisting to serve in the Second World War in Winnipeg along with his, claiming he was 45.
He made it all the way to Halifax where he was discharged and sent home (he was 48)
