James “Jimmy” Shapland was from Eagle River. “Jimmy” enlisted at Dryden and was accepted into the Army but denied front line duty because of a bad foot (a horse stepped on it on the family farm). He served overseas in the Canadian Forestry Corps in WW1.
The Shapland family farmed in Eagle River and had a sawmill there.
Jim and his brothers donated all of the lumber used to build the little chapel on Hwy 17 in Minnitaki.
