The Northwestern Health Unit is warning of more algae blooms in the region.
A new bloom has been reported in the Bonny Bay Road area of Wabigoon Lake.
With blue-green algae already confirmed in the north end of the lake, health officials say further sampling will not be done on the new bloom and it should be treated like it’s also blue-green algae.
Another bloom has been spotted north of Frog Rapids in Abram Lake near Sioux Lookout and is currently being tested for blue-green algae by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.
While these results have not been confirmed yet, the NWHU asks people to treat it as though it is blue-green algae until further notice.
Blue-green algae can produce toxins and pose health risks to people and animals when exposed.
Blooms often make the water look blue-green or olive-green, or like green pea soup or turquoise paint.
Do not drink, swim or use the water for bathing or any household purposes, including boiling it as it increases toxin levels.
Do not boil the water, as this can cause an increase in toxin levels.
It’s recommended to wait at least two weeks after the bloom has disappeared before resuming normal use of the water.
If you spot a bloom, report it to the Spills Action Centre at 1-866-MOETIPS (6638477).
