More support for livestock farmers in the region, and others impacted by drought conditions this summer.
Through a joined provincial-federal AgriRecovery program, area farmers will be eligible for funding for their cattle to offset feed and other related costs to get them through the winter months.
The province’s Agricultural Minister Lisa Thompson made the announcement this week while touring the riding.
“It’s geared up to again cover the extraordinary costs that have been realized because of this drought and the longevity of the drought,” states Thompson.
Thompson says it’s important to make farmers aware of the financial assistance that’s being offered.
“And it means as they look through the fall and into the winter they are going to be receiving $220 dollars per head in terms of cattle. Goats and Sheep…they’ll be receiving approximately $23 dollars a head.”
The program is available to eligible farmers in the Kenora, Rainy River and Thunder Bay regions.
Farmers in all of northwestern Ontario of other livestock species such as bison, elk, alpacas, and llamas are also eligible.
Thompson made the announcement in Emo Thursday.
