Everyone deserves a safe Labour Day long weekend.
That message from Ontario Provincial Police.
Motorists are asked to follow the rules and drive with caution as highways will be cluttered the next couple of days.
Officers will be working around the clock, enforcing traffic laws in order to keep people safe.
As of the end of August, 176 people have died in 166 fatal collisions on OPP-patrolled roads.
Forty-seven involved excessive speed and 33 were attributed to an inattentive driver.
Lack of driver and passenger seatbelt use contributed to 29 deaths, while alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in 22 of this year’s road fatalities.
Police will also be concentrating on rural areas and waterways.
The OPP has responded to 23 boater/paddler fatalities and 14 off-road vehicle deaths so far this year.
You are once again reminded to ensure you have a lifejacket on when out on the water.
