One of the first lessons learned when hiking in the woods for your first time is to “leave it better than you found it.” Sure, it’s a cheesy phrase. But it’s also simple and to the point. Unfortunately though, it seems like some people missed that memo completely. Earlier this week in Thunder Bay, there was a dangerous incident that happened in the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and it was all caught on video.
Originally posted to Tik Tok, the video has circulated all over social media and showcases why it’s so important to respect the trail.
@cantthinkstraight30 This is what happens when you push a giant rock off a 560m cliff! #fypシ #sleepinggiant
As seen in the video, someone nudged a huge rock over the edge of the Top of the Giant Trail which could’ve been a deadly mistake had anyone been hiking the Kabeyun Trail below. Even I have used the trail in the past, making it a point to stop below the lookout to marvel over the size of the mountain. As you can imagine, the video has angered avid nature lovers everywhere and even caught the attention of Provincial Park staff. “This type of reckless behaviour poses safety risks to others, damages natural objects in a park, and blatantly disrespects a site that is sacred to many who visit our remarkable natural environment.”
No fines have been issued at this time.
Not the best decision-making on display here, but all the more reason to respect the trail.
