July 1 is being treated as a day of reflection in support of Indigenous peoples across Canada.
Most Canada Day celebrations have been scrapped after the bodies of residential school children were found in unmarked graves in B.C. and Saskatchewan.
Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance says we must do all we can to address the historic and ongoing damage Canada has done to Indigenous people.
“The nation, not only our government and our leaders, but all of us must put our attention to listening to learning and to raise our awareness.”
Lawrance notes, “The recent news has perhaps created a national mood that can be a catalyst for significant and meaningful change.”
He adds, “Let’s listen and learn about the history of Canada and all Canadians, new Canadians, long time Canadians, and especially those Canadians who are Indigenous to this land.”
