The Northwestern Health Unit is closely monitoring rare reports of potential heart inflammation (myocarditis/pericarditis) following a COVID vaccine.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says, “This side effect is rare and most cases worldwide have occurred within several days after vaccination. Most cases have occurred in teens and young adult males after receiving the second dose of the vaccine.”
She stresses most cases have had mild illness, responded well to treatment, and symptoms improved quickly.
Dr. Young Hoon says all immunizers at their clinics will share this information and all possible side effects to ensure that consent of vaccination is fully informed.
She stresses national and provincial guidelines haven’t changed, and the vaccines continue to be recommended for all eligible individuals including youth and young adults.
Dr. Young Hoon says the benefits of the mRNA vaccine continue to outweigh the risks.
She notes local health officials, along with national and provincial health agencies, are closely monitoring.
