Tikinagan Child and Family Services is recognizing Honouring Our Children Day Thursday.
The day was started in 2010 as a way to honour children in care across the 30 Northwestern Ontario First Nations the agency serves.
Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance, Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa and Thunder Bay Mayor Bill Mauro delivered the following video message:
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took time to recognize Tikinagan and this important day.
He says this year has been difficult for many given the pandemic.
Trudeau stresses that’s why it’s critical that we all take time to make children feel special and notes that takes a community effort.
Tikinagan Executive Director Thelma Morris says kids need to be celebrated and honoured, especially those who are in care and away from their families.
Morris says, “They need to see there is a caring, supportive community standing with them and cheering them on.”
