The Lake of the Woods Women’s Walleye Tournament gets underway Saturday.
Jen Hansen is chair of the event and says not much will have to change because of COVID-19.
“Some differences this year is that we don’t have an in-person rule meeting, awards or a dinner,” says Hansen, “Luckily with the nature of a fishing tournament teams spend most of their day alone out on the lake, so there weren’t too many chances that we had to make.”
She tells us why it’s such an important event.
“We are the only women’s tournament of any kind in our region. We aim to empower and give space to women in fishing events. Women are the fastest-growing segment in the fishing industry and I think that especially our sponsors recognize that and can see just how untapped this market is.”
Hansen adds that that’s not all that sets it apart.
“Being a conservation-minded tournament, we are a catch, record release only (tournament). That means no live fish are coming to the docks at the end of the day. Teams will be taking pictures and submitting an SD card instead of submitting fish.
You can follow along with the tournament tomorrow through the Lake of the Woods Women’s Walleye Facebook page.
