In loving memory of Wilfred Leslie Plomp who was known to all as ‘Les’, at the age of 97 years, passed away peacefully in the afternoon sunshine on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at the Dryden Regional Health Centre.
Les was born August 10, 1923 to Winifred and Willem Plomp in LaRivere, Manitoba and was one of 10 siblings.
Les was predeceased by his wife Jean Henrietta Timmerman, son David, sisters Hilda, Mary, Dorothy, Irene, Rosella, Grace and brother Fred.
Les is survived by his daughter Barbara Sturtevant (James), grandsons Aaron and Brock Sturtevant, Kris and Les Plomp. Les is also survived by his sisters Ruby and Margaret.
Les will be remembered by his family and friends as a great story teller, a poet, an inventor, magician and all around entertainer, and for his love of picking blueberries. His grade 3 education did not hold him back from learning and achieving high praise as a mechanic. He did not complete his grade 4 because it was depression time and he had to go to work. Because of his inquisitive nature and his love of learning he was always pursuing answers to his questions about how things worked.
His love for magic started in childhood and he mastered many tricks which brought out his natural ability to entertain. He used his entertaining abilities on radio, singing, playing guitar, and telling stories with great enthusiasm. When Les was a young adult he was introduced to the poet Robert Service and his parents bought him a book, soon he was reciting long poems like the Cremation of Sam McGee.
Les loved to pick blueberries! In a good year he could pick in excess of 700 pounds. In order to be efficient he developed a method for picking and invented a machine for cleaning. He would either sell or through his generous nature would just give pails away.
To live out his life of Christian faith was a constant goal, he attended church faithfully, read his Bible, and sought to be kind and generous to all. He was confident of his eternal life promised by his saviour Jesus Christ. He looked forward to a reunion with his wife Jean, married 70 years, when he ‘crossed the river’.
His daughter would like to extend her thanks to all who cared for Les at DRHC and the continual support of his First Baptist Church family. Also many thanks go to staff at Patricia Gardens for their care and service.
He will be deeply missed.
A Memorial Funeral Service will be held Saturday September 25th, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church with Pastor Adam Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the Dryden Cemetery.
