Ontario has reached a key milestone in the fight against COVID-19.
Premier Doug Ford says they are ahead of their vaccination schedule with some 65% of adults receiving their first shot.
Ford says 8.5 million doses have been administered, calling the rollout the best in the world.
“Based on what we know about upcoming shipments, everyone in Ontario, who wants a vaccine, can be fully vaccinated by the end of August.”
Ford says if supply holds, they are on track to have a “Two Dose Summer.”
Starting Monday May 31, anyone over the age of 80 will be able to get their second COVID dose, followed by 70+ beginning the week June of 14.
Ford says second vaccines will be available on a first come-first-serve basis after they care for the elderly.
The premier also addressed Friday continued pressure to reopen schools.
Ford says he’s waiting to hear back from experts, unions and those in the education field about the next step, stressing he won’t rush into a decision.
Ford states no one wants kids back in school more than he does but stresses any decision has to be made on sound, scientific and medical advice that protects students and staff.
He notes if it takes an extra couple of days, so be it, noting this is a massive decision that will affect every single person in Ontario.
Ford notes his main concern is COVID variants and case numbers going up as a result.
