The TenSisters Transitional Housing development in Red Lake is officially up and running.
The Kenora District Services Board partnered with New Starts for Women to create 10 units for women and children fleeing domestic violence.
At the same time, New Starts for Women celebrates it’s 30th year in operation.
Executive Director of New Starts Jennifer Chamberlin says this project creates much-needed affordable housing units in the community and will allow those accessing services and supports to thrive while regaining their independence and ending reliance on their abuser.
“We are happy to invite participants into TenSisters Transitional Housing, it has taken the dedication of countless people and many years of hard work to get us here. We will now be able to offer safe housing for up to two years with programming for ten women and her children who have experienced violence. The design of our building is focused around a space that is safe, warm and inviting. It is our goal to help create a sense of community and strength among our program participants, staff and community partners that we will be working with.”
Chief Administrative Officer of the KDSB Henry Wall calls the new development a great moment for Red Lake.
“On behalf of our Board, we are honoured to be involved in such a meaningful project. From the initial concept to planning, execution, and completion, it was exceptional to see the amount of support and collaboration that we had working in partnership with New Starts for Women Inc. and having the full support of the Municipality. This initiative will ensure that many women and children fleeing domestic violence have a safe and connected space to be.”
A virtual grand opening of TenSisters will be live on the NSWS Facebook Page at 3:00 pm local time on Thursday, May 20.
