Lakehead University in Thunder Bay continues to voice concerns with provincial plans to move the Northern Ontario School of Medicine into a stand-alone degree-granting institution.
President Moira McPherson told a legislative committee this week the medical school is benefiting from the partnership with LU.
“Lakehead University currently provides academic supports to NOSM students, faculty and staff. Critical supports and services such as registration, student health and wellness, and student accommodations.”
McPherson adds a stand-alone facility will only lead to a duplication of services, higher costs for the medical school and students, and a direct impact on taxpayers.
She notes, “The costs could amount to millions and millions of dollars. Reflecting not only one time capital costs but also significant increases in administration costs.”
McPherson stresses their relationship with NOSM remains solid.
“Lakehead is and has always been a reliable partner that is operated with a balanced budget policy with sound practices.”
Laurentian University’s move into creditor protection is seen as the main reason behind the government decision to look into the changes.
