The provincial government is taking steps to enhance the forest industry, grow the economy and reduce waste.
A draft Forest Biomass Action Plan has been released and is up for public review and comment.
The strategy examines innovative uses of forest biomass including sustainable, low-carbon consumer products.
It outlines five key objectives:
1. Identifying pathways to markets for forest biomass
2. Supporting demand for forest bioenergy and bioproducts
3. Improving the business and regulatory environments for the use of forest biomass
4. Supporting holistic, culturally relevant pathways for Indigenous community involvement in forest biomass value chains to support reconciliation between Indigenous communities and the Crown
5. Communicating, collaborating and informing on forest biomass opportunities
Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry John Yakabuski says the action plan sets out a path to new markets and local jobs, and it does so while improving Ontario’s environmental stewardship.
Ian Dunn is the President and Chief Executive Officer with the Ontario Forest Industries Association and says, “Expanding the use of forest biomass is essential to the competitiveness of the forest industry and will further assist in meeting an increased demand for dimensional lumber and other wood products.”
Dunn adds, “This plan will create jobs and promote sustainable economic development, which OFIA and its member companies are deeply committed to. OFIA is pleased to see the government continue to make progress on the goals set out in the Forest Sector Strategy.”
Feedback will be accepted until June 21 at Draft Forest Biomass Action Plan but additional comments received will be considered as the government completes further consultations with Indigenous partners.
