Stiffer penalties are coming for motorists caught stunt driving, street racing or driving aggressively.
The proposed legislation would see roadside vehicle impoundment increase from seven days to 14 days, and roadside driver’s licence suspensions extend from seven days to 30 days.
A lower speed threshold will also created for those travelling 40 km/h or more above the posted limit on roads where the speed limit is less than 80 km/h.
The same legislation introduces a graduated sentencing scale with a life driving ban on a third conviction.
Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney says across Ontario, charges for stunt driving increased 52% between this past March and August 2020, over the same period in 2019, despite far fewer vehicles on the road.
She adds the number of driver’s licence suspensions issued at roadside for street racing/stunt driving increased 130% between 2013 and 2019.
Mulroney stresses this trend is very unsettling and one they are taking very seriously.
Provincial Police Commissioner Thomas Carrique says, “Engaging in stunt driving, racing and speeding is more than just breaking the law. It endangers lives and results in fatalities and injuries on our roads every year. The Moving Ontarians More Safely Act is an important step towards addressing the serious road safety issues created by aggressive drivers and unsafe towing practices.”
