The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 15-year-old was struck by an Anti-Riot Weapon Monday evening in Kenora.
Provincial Police received a call around 7:15 about a robbery at a downtown restaurant.
Officers found the person of interest behind a home in an alleyway between 5th and 6th Avenue South.
The SIU says there was an interaction, and one officer discharged what is known as an ARWEN, a firearm that discharges plastic projectiles.
The teen was hit and transported to hospital for assessment.
The youth did not sustain any serious injury, but the SIU’s mandate was invoked because a police officer discharged an ARWEN, which is classified as a firearm.
Three investigators have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm.
