The federal Conservatives are disappointed the Liberals and the NDP have turned down their motion calling for the government to release a safe reopening plan.
Kenora MP Eric Melillo says, “All emphasis that this motion that we brought forward was not a plan to lift all restrictions and just reopen up everything. What we’re asking for was a data driven, gradual plan, to safely reopen the economy.”
Melillo stresses we are now over a year into this pandemic and people want and need answers as to how our country is going to recover from COVID-19.
“All the frustration we’re hearing. Whether it’s individual people. Whether it’s businesses or organizations. It all sort of lies at the feet of the federal government. I think they are doing a terrible job at being transparent.”
Melillo notes the government has shown no data, no modelling and no plan on moving forward.
He adds Canadians need to see a roadmap of sector-specific support for those hardest hit, including the travel and tourism industry.
Tony Baldinelli is the Special Advisor to the Conservative Leader on Tourism Recovery and says they want to see the following:
-Widespread implementation and use of rapid testing devices
-Timely vaccination procurement and delivery to provinces and territories
-Economic recovery measures to help kickstart the Canadian economy on the other side of the pandemic
Baldinelli adds, “The President of the United States and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom have both released public plans for economic reopening, yet the Trudeau government has not yet given Canadians clarity on when regular economic activity and social life will be able to resume as normal.”
He says, “Canadians have sacrificed and suffered tremendously throughout this pandemic. It’s time for the Trudeau government to tall Canadians how they are going to get life back to normal.”
