The MPP for Kiiwetinoong is accusing the province of playing jurisdictional ping-pong in addressing a severe housing shortage in Fort Hope First Nation.
Sol Mamakwa is calling for an immediate plan to alleviate the crisis.
“Multiple generations live in overcrowded homes without adequate heat and plumbing. Currently there are 17 people living in tents and shacks in winter weather. You can not isolate from COVID-19 in tents.”
Mamakwa says the remote community has so far been able to stop the spread of the virus in spite of their housing conditions but stresses they need resources to stop COVID.
He stresses the lack of housing resulted in one women’s death from health complications.
Mamakwa notes, “Ontario is a Treaty partner with Eabametoong, with Treaty #9. How is it possible to not have a proper place to live and die in? Where is the decency?”
