The Supreme Court has struck down a challenge to Canada’s Carbon pricing law.
NDP Environment critic Peter Tabuns says the court challenges have cost Ontario taxpayers millions of dollars.
“The government lost at the Appeals Court, they lost at the Supreme Court,” states Tabuns.
“They wasted money putting stickers on gas pumps to show how angry they were…but anger address the climate crisis, only real action will.”
Liberal critic Mitzie Hunter says the Ford Government is wasting taxpayers dollars by these court challenges.
“Spending $30 million dollars to the federal Carbon Tax and fining small business owners tens of thousands dollars for refusing to display anti-climate stickers, which the courts also deemed unconstitutional.”
Under the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, the federal government collects taxes on 21 types of fuel, including gasoline.
According to the federal government’s website, the Carbon tax will be going up to 8.8 cents a litre as of April 1st.
The group Environmental Defense was one of the intervenors in the case and says carbon pricing is one of the most effective tools the government can use to help reduce pollution and it has been shown to work across Canada.
