Reta Audrey Marie Szabo (Gilbert)
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Reta Szabo announces her passing on February 21, 2021. Left to treasure her memory is her loving husband Link, having just celebrated 59 years of marriage. Cherished mother of Jim (Alison), proud Nan of Brenden and Blair, whom her world revolved around. Survived by her sisters Colette Goode (Roger) of Corbeil, ON and Jan Groneng (Martin) of Peterborough, ON, in-laws Ernie and Paulette Szabo, Aurel and Shirley Szabo, Pat and Gord Turrie. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, with special mention to her niece Pierrette Palmquist of Traverse City, Michigan. Predeceased by her parents Ernie and Alice Gilbert, sister Marie Debrie, brother Ernie, and in infancy, brothers Jim and Donald.
Reta was a dedicated teacher at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Dryden for 34 years. During her tenure, she acted as teacher, principal, and coordinator of many fundraising events. Over the years she helped many students in need, both emotionally and financially, by supplying food and clothing. Reta’s top priority was always what was the best for her students. For her outstanding dedication and commitment, Reta was awarded The Ontario Teacher of the Year Award, an award she always treasured. Reta was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Women’s League, spending many years involved with funeral luncheons and bazars. Reta and Link enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas, a trip to Europe, and after retirement, they spent many winters in St. Pete’s Beach, Florida, where family members were always welcomed with open arms. Reta was an avid reader and a creative knitter. Many of her family and friends enjoyed the wonderful creations she made for them and you could feel the love she knitted into every stitch.
A Memorial Funeral Service will be held Thursday September 23rd, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Reverend Alan Campeau officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
