The federal government is not ready to open the Canada-US border.
The closure, which began in March 2020, has been extended until March 21st, making it a full year of travel restrictions between the two countries.
Health Minister Patty Hajdu says that may change, but not with COVID-19 case numbers as they are now.
“As we head into spring, and more vaccinations, of course things could look better, but right now, we are asking Canadians to remain where they are and stay home,” she says.
Hajdu explains they’re listening to doctors and scientists, who are keeping an eye on a number of factors.
“Those include things like, what is the coronavirus doing around the world, what is happening here in Canada in terms of our own case loads, in terms of our own immunity,” Hajdu notes.
Hajdu emphasizes this isn’t the time to travel unnecessarily.
