A quiet day on the COVID-19 front in Northwestern Ontario.
No new cases to report today in the Northwestern Health Unit catchment area, but there are 17 active cases in the region.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says as of yesterday, 13 cases are in the Kenora hub and 4 in the Sioux Lookout hub.
Young Hoon adds all recent cases in the Kenora hub are close contacts of other known cases.
Between February 1-7 the test positivity rate was 0.7 percent, compared to 0.54 percent the previous week.
There were also two new hospitalizations in the last week, with one person in the region remaining in hospital for COVID-19.
In the meantime, Young Hoon says COVID-19 vaccinations continue for local long-term care residents.
“We have received another shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine to complete the first doses for residents of long-term care homes and elder care homes in our area. The distribution and vaccinations will be happening over the next few days across the region.”
The health unit did not provide how many doses were received in the second shipment, and will not going forward due to security reasons as doses start to increase, but Young Hoon did say it’s similar to the first shipment which was 300.
The health unit expects to give the first dose of the vaccine to all long-term care residents by the provincial target date of February 10, while some residents may receive their first dose on February 11th.
Young Hoon adds there has been no word from the province on when another shipment of vaccines will arrive for the second dose supply.
